In his masterful speech to congress, Hakeem Jeffries quoted scripture from Galatians, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
Do you sometimes feel weary and want to give up? You’re doing good, but nobody’s paying attention?
Are you asking these questions in the privacy of your mind?
- Whose life am I living?
- Why, even when things are going well, do things feel not quite right?
- Am I walking through life in shoes that are too small for me?
- Why does life seem like a script written elsewhere, and I have been barely consulted, if at all?
- Why does so much seem like a disappointment, a betrayal, a bankruptcy of expectations?
Maybe the lyrics of that classic song by Peggy Lee run through your head now and then:
Is that all there is, is that all there is?
If that’s all there is my friends, then let’s keep dancing.
Let’s break out the booze and have a ball
If that’s all there is.
If you’re in midlife or beyond, you’re probably asking these questions. You know you want more, but you’re not sure what you want more of yet. You’ve lost your way, as we all do.
Like ships at sea, we need a lighthouse to give us some direction. Our lighthouse is out there.
In Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey, the first step of the journey is when the hero hears the call to adventure. The second step is when he refuses the call.
Our lighthouse is out there showing us the way. We ignore it or don’t trust it. It’s calling us to discover our gifts and a way to use those gifts in the service of others. Once we find that, the light shines brightly and we set a course for our own Hero’s Journey.
